According to Lee Corrigan, tournament director for the State Farm Senior Classic, the past two years running the Toyota Invitational at Cattail Creek Country Club were merely a prelude to hosting one of the largest events Howard County has ever seen.

The State Farm Senior Classic, featuring 78 of the top senior players and a purse of $ 1.25 million, will take place at Hobbit's Glen Golf Course in Columbia from July 3-5, with preliminary events beginning earlier that week. Proceeds from the tournament will be distributed to several area nonprofit organizations, the primary beneficiary being Maryland Special Olympics. The Tour's average payout to nonprofit recipients is $ 200, 000, with the most successful tournament raising over $ 1 million for local charities.

The Howard County Tourism Council reports that Howard County's largest events to date have been the Memorial Day Soccer Tournament, the Sheep & Wool Festival, Wine in the Woods and the Grand Prix horse race at Howard Community College. This year's tournament is expected to draw some 100, 000 people, with an estimated economic impact of $ 20 million for local and regional businesses.

Lee Corrigan indicated that PGA Tour officials consider Hobbit's Glen Golf Course to be a diamond in the rough, needing only minor transformations for the tournament.

We want this to be a pleasurable experience for everyone, says Lee Corrigan.

Information regarding the State Farm Senior Classic can be found on Howard County Tourism's Web site at : howardcountymdtour.com or the PGA Web site at pgatour.com. A 30-minute feature on Cable 15 will begin running the first week of June, highlighting the tournament and what Howard Countians can expect during this event. Ticket prices range from $ 25 for one day of the tournament to $ 30, 000 for a hospitality tent package that includes multiple badges and Pro-Am playing opportunities (but no food).
