Nearly 17,500 runners — 20 percent more than last year — are registered to participate in Saturday's array of events, said Lee Corrigan, president of Elkridge-based Corrigan Sports Enterprises, the festival's owners and organizers.
The 2007 festival pumped $18 million into local hotels, restaurants, shops, and transportation vehicles, according to a study by Towson University economic research firm RESI.That study assumed that each runner was accompanied by approximately two guests, stayed 2.5 days in the city, and spent $177.50 per day.Nearly 41,000 visitors traveled to Charm City for last year's event, the study said.
The majority of the events — featuring the marquee Under Armour 26.2-mile Full Marathon, the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Half-Marathon, Legg Mason Team Relay, United Way 5K, and a Kids' Fun Run — are sold out, Corrigan said following a press conference Thursday.
There are less than 100 spots remaining for the full marathon, Corrigan said.
