Nearly 17,500 runners — 20 percent more than last year — are registered to participate in Saturday's array of events, said Lee Corrigan, president of Elkridge-based Corrigan Sports Enterprises, the festival's owners and organizers.

The 2007 festival pumped $18 million into local hotels, restaurants, shops, and transportation vehicles, according to a study by Towson University economic research firm RESI.That study assumed that each runner was accompanied by approximately two guests, stayed 2.5 days in the city, and spent $177.50 per day.Nearly 41,000 visitors traveled to Charm City for last year's event, the study said.

The majority of the events — featuring the marquee Under Armour 26.2-mile Full Marathon, the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Half-Marathon, Legg Mason Team Relay, United Way 5K, and a Kids' Fun Run — are sold out, Corrigan said following a press conference Thursday.

There are less than 100 spots remaining for the full marathon, Corrigan said.

"We've made it a big-time event," said Lee Corrigan, of Corrigan Sports, the event's manager."I have no doubt we're going to sell out."

All four host hotels have sold out of rooms set aside for runners that weekend, Corrigan said.

"We have made a lot of effort getting to the people that work with him," said Lee Corrigan, president of Corrigan Sports Enterprises.

The event this year is expected to attract between 4,000 and 4,500 runners.

Corrigan, whose company organizes the Baltimore marathon -- which had more than 14,500 runners last year -- said the new course was necessary for the future of the Frederick event.

"The bottom line is the event outgrew the start and finish line being at the baseball stadium," he said.

The Oct. 11 event is 70 percent toward reaching its sponsorship budget, said Lee Corrigan, president of Elkridge-based Corrigan Sports Enterprises, the festival's owner and organizer. This year's marathon and complementary events will cost nearly $1.3 million to stage.Mid-level sponsorships, between $20,000 and $50,000, are a tougher sell in this slow economy, compared to previous years, Corrigan said.

Snack food company Utz has dropped its mid-level sponsorship of the marathon, Corrigan said.Hanover, Pa.-based Utz is donating its products to the event.Companies are not as inclined to sign up for smaller sponsorships because they feel "they're not getting as big as a bang for their buck" in this economy, Corrigan said.

Lee Corrigan, president of the event's owner and operator of Corrigan Sports Enterprises, said sponsorships of the festival ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 are lagging a bit behind last year's sales pace.

"It's a little bit tougher this year," Corrigan said.
