(VelaPharm.com), a privately held company specializing in the "rediscovery" and development of medicines for the central nervous system (CNS), announced today the hiring of Karen Correnti, PhD, JD, as Senior Director of Intellectual Property.

Dr. Correnti brings to VelaPharm extensive life science industry experience in intellectual property law combined with a doctorate-level education in biochemistry.She previously worked at such companies as Incyte Corporation, Mendel Biotechnology, and Aventis-Behring, LLC.Her job functions have included identifying inventions, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, creating and implementing patent strategies, and overseeing intellectual property aspects of transactions and FDA filings.

Dr. Correnti earned a BS in chemistry from M.I.T.She then earned a PhD in biochemistry and worked as a research scientist at U.C.L.A., where she was advised by Nobel Laureate Paul D. Boyer, PhD.She received a JD from Santa Clara University School of Law.
