David Correa says he has not only been fired from his post with the Juvenile Justice Department, but has also been removed from his paid position as coordinator of the Naples Neighborhood Accountability Board. His former employer, Circuit Manager Frank Busbee, allegedly dismissed Correa after he sent out a return e-mail message in December to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, encouraging the group to "remember to keep Christ in Christmas."According to Correa, Busbee was "screaming and yelling over the phone" and was not willing to rethink the decision to terminate the volunteer worker, who felt that the use of the word "Christ" at Christmas time "should not evoke such a strong emotion from a person -- especially a person who is in charge of a juvenile justice department."
    ...
"Why he took offense at my use of the word 'Christ' I still can't ever understand," Correa says.
    ...
However, a spokesman for Juvenile Justice Secretary Anthony Schembri says the Southwest Florida Juvenile Detention Center School had "performance issues" with Correa.

"It's something that has to be addressed equally," said Correa, a past president of the Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board."Don't just pick on the Mexican migrants. If we're going to do something, let's do it equally."

Correa added: "The country has to be secure - let's be clear on that.

LEE COUNTY - David Correa served at the Department of Juvenile Justice in a voluntary position, working to keep first-time juvenile offenders out of jail.In December, he sent what he thought was an innocent e-mail to a local business, but he ended the email with a phrase that got him fired.

For years, David Correa volunteered for the Juvenile Justice Department in Naples. An email Correa sent put his job in jeopardy.

"It was December 23rd and I replied 'Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Keep the Christ in Christmas,'" said Correa.

He sent the e-mail and copied it to his boss.A few minutes later, his boss gave him a call.

"He said he was cutting off my account and I would no longer be able to use the e-mail," said Correa.

Without a computer, Correa couldn't work.

In January, Correa was fired from his paid position at Florida Gulf Coast University. It was a part-time job he worked alongside his volunteer position.
    ...
"I just felt that it was the proper greeting," said Correa.

FGCU officials say Correa was fired for performance issues.

But Carr and Correa think it all stemmed from the e-mail.
    ...
"If I would have been told not to use the word Christ I wouldn't have used it," said Correa.

David Correa is not suing either the Department of Juvenile Justice or FGCU.He says he just wants his reputation and his job restored.

The university has already replaced Correa and DJJ officials say they have no plans to reinstate his volunteer position.

Though there is room for more work to be done, it is clear that Collier Hispanics are in sync with David Correa, chairman of county government's Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board: getting ahead means learning English.True for younger Hispanics filling opportunities in entry-level employment, and more mature new arrivals who are held back from former professions because of the language barrier.

The incentive to succeed and the willingness to work at it ought to help rally public support for government- sponsored teaching programs. They counter the notion that new Hispanics come here, buck the system and expect America to learn their language.

Supplemental teamwork - such as the county working to match transit schedules to class times - is a real plus.

David Correa, Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board chairman, said he has been targeting Hispanics at various Latin music concerts and events throughout the county to motivate them to register to vote.

Still, there are some Hispanics who are wary about the political process even if it means ultimately gaining clout, he said.

"I think part of it is has to do with the large number of migrant workers in this county who aren't legal," Correa said."This fear carries over to the legals who say they don't want to be involved with government."
