A big reason for the success of the Cal State L.A. distance programs, Gretchen Corrales is in her third year as an assistant coach for the cross country and track and field programs.Her primary duties are working with the distance runners during the cross country and track and field seasons.Corrales was honored in 2007 when she was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) West Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.This past fall, she helped the Cal State L.A. cross country team record its second consecutive national top-five finish, a second-place NCAA Division II West Region placing and a California Collegiate Athletic Association team championship.

Men's decathalete Desi Burt was named the USTFCCCA West Region Athlete of the Year, while Cal State L.A. Track and Field assistant coach Gretchen Corrales has been named West Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.Burt won 2007 California Collegiate Athletic Association championships in three events, the high jump, long jump, and high hurdles and also scored points for the team in four other events, including a pair of relay teams.He had the top point total in the decathlon in the nation heading into the NCAA Division II Championships and held the lead in the decathlon through seven events before a pair of broken poles led to a no-height in the pole vault.Burt, a junior at Cal State L.A., also enjoyed success in the Cal-Nevada Championships in Fresno, earning All-Cal-Nevada Performer status in the long jump. Corrales, meanwhile, earned the top assistant coach honor after helping with an outstanding group of Golden Eagle distance runners.According to CSULA Track and Field head coach Chris Asher, "[Corrales] did an outstanding job [working with the Golden Eagles' distance runners] and is very deserving of this honor."
