Landscape. Photo copyright 2001 , Mike Corrado One of the first people to get his hands on the Coolpix 880 when it was introduced last Fall was Mike Corrado , manager of technical services and training at Nikon. And the first thing he wanted to check out on the brand new digital camera was....well , we'll let him tell you.
Close-Up. Photo copyright 2001 , Mike Corrado By far , the most intriguing feature to me was the scene modes. Just set the dial for any one of 11 scene choices and the camera takes care of all the settings. So for folks who just bought it , the Coolpix 880 comes out of the box ready to take pictures. And later on , once you're familiar with it , you can choose your own specific settings-or just dial in a scene mode when you want to quickly capture an image..
And to capture that image no matter what it might be , the Coolpix 880's scene modes cover all the bases : portrait , party/indoor , night portrait , beach/snow , landscape , sunset , night landscape , fireworks , close-up , copy and backlight.
...
Aperture priority , slow-synch flash. Photo copyright 2001 , Mike Corrado Copy mode is very cool , Mike says , especially if your company has a 'take your camera to work' day. Seriously , though , that mode automatically sets the Coolpix 880 to take a black-and-white , high contrast image so you can photograph notes on a boardroom whiteboard or copy a document. For those situations , I came away thinking of the camera as a quick scanner..
How do the scene modes work. Here's an example : In landscape mode the camera sets up to provide the greatest depth-of-field and sharpen the edges of subjects to create a sharper , more pronounced image overall. Beach. Photo copyright 2001 , Mike Corrado And not only do the scene modes control aperture , shutter speed and flash for given situations , they also handle white balance , sharpness , contrast and other digitally-related variables.
Portrait. Photo copyright 2001 , Mike Corrado Best of all , the Coolpix 880 is a full-featured Nikon , with a 3.34 megapixel CCD that delivers true image resolution of 2048 x 1536 ; 2.5x Zoom-Nikkor lens equivalent to 38 to 95mm in the 35mm format ; three metering modes-Nikon's legendary 256-element Matrix , plus spot and center-weighted ; five-area autofocus plus manual focus control ; close focusing to 1.6 inches ; and exposure control choices that include programmed auto , aperture priority and manual.
Finally , Mike tells us he really enjoyed the 880's Quick Review feature. Hit the Quick Review button and you'll see the image you just took in the corner of the frame while the rest of the frame shows live action. Hit the button again and the frame fills with the captured picture. Now you can decide whether it's a keeper or not.. Sunset. Photo copyright 2001 , Mike Corrado There's more , but we're going to let you make some discoveries of your own. Pick up this incredibly compact , incredibly capable camera and see how much you can do-right from the start , right out of the box.
The Coolpix 880 was born ready.
