Pottery Burn owner Krista Corrado honored for helping blood cancer patients

When Krista Corrado was asked whether she'd be interested in raising money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, she thought all she'd have to do was collect donations , you know, put a donation jar on display in her business, The Pottery Burn.

It all sounded simple enough, so she answered yes. But "that isn't what it was all about," she said Sept. 21.

Corrado, 29, then attended a rally, where she heard patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers praise the society for helping them.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society funds blood cancer research, education and patient services. Its mission , according to its Web site, www.leukemia-lymphoma.org , is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma. Since it was founded in 1949, it has spent more than $360 million on blood cancer research.

After the rally, Corrado knew she wanted to help, to do something more than simply send money.

She must have done something right, because eight weeks after agreeing to support the cause, the society's Naples branch named her its Woman of the Year 2005 during a June 4 gala.

Corrado and her fundraising team , including her mother, Trecy Tekus, and her campaign manager, Coral Aiken-Miller , collected more than $24,000 through a series of events, including an auction of small dolphin sculptures (one of which was auctioned off for $1,400), a winetasting and a Cut-A-Thon that involved the participation of three Marco Island hair salons.
    ...
"I did it, and I was happy to do it," Corrado said. "After seeing and talking to people who have leukemia and were helped by the society, I knew (the society) was doing well."

Corrado had only one competitor for the title of Woman of the Year, but she didn't do what she did for prestige or a plaque.

The plaque is proudly displayed on a shelf inside The Pottery Burn, a paint-your-own-pottery studio in the Marco Town Center Mall.

Corrado opened the studio in 2000 in a space near Marek's Collier House Restaurant on Bald Eagle Drive, but she made the move to the studio's current location in 2003.

She's lived on Marco Island since 1995, when the allure of "no snow" brought her here from Wisconsin. Corrado and her husband, Charlie, have three dogs.

After Murphy finished the story, Krista Corrado, owner of The Pottery Burn on Bald Eagle Drive, supervised the children as they painted ceramic sorcerer's hats.

Corrado, who started The Pottery Burn about a year ago, will also host the city's hands-on clay program next month. Because that program will be held at The Pottery Burn, participants will be able to glaze and fire their ceramic pieces. With no kiln at Mackle Park, children in the story draw program take home their pieces after each class.

"This is easier. They don't want to give (the pieces) up," Corrado said, laughing.

As the children washed their hands, Corrado placed a piece of foam between each hat's top and bottom half to prevent the halves from sticking together.
