Join us as we talk with Doreen Corrado, a patient who underwent a gastric bypass (the most common form of bariatric surgery). She has lost more than one hundred pounds since the surgery, and her weight is still on the decline.
...
Joining us today to share her experiences with bariatric surgery is Ms. Doreen Corrado. She underwent a gastric bypass procedure 10 months ago. Doreen, thanks for joining us. And also joining us, two experts on the subject.
...
And Doreen, let's start right with you on the end. And can you tell us what your thought process was that led you down the road to getting bariatric surgery?
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Well I think the process was actually a very long process. I spent considerable time researching the surgery. What were the long term effects, how my life would change. And I think the real demarcation of when I knew it was what I wanted was when my daughter told me she was expecting her second child.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Probably all of them, and some. Fasting, grapefruit diets, once a day, not eating at all, all liquids. Anything possible that came out on the market I tried.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Well you know, I think for some time they probably all work initially.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Almost 400 lbs.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: --That's okay, this is one woman who's proud.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Yes, actually I'm still on the decline. I'm down about 130 lbs. And of course, as a woman, more important, 10 sizes.
...
DAVID FOLK THOMAS: So now, Doreen, did you know Dr. Flancbaum before you elected to have the surgery?
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: No.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Yes.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: There's a very lengthy interview that's involved to assess where I've been, what I've tried, maybe how I'd rate what was successful and what my expectations were. So yeah, for sure.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Six weeks.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Other than mental preparation, really nothing.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: No.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: You know, it's interesting because that crossed my mind. My initial feeling was I'll probably hit every Wendy's or McDonald's on the way home from his appointment.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: I think probably mental, emotional, psychological was the biggest challenge.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Incredible. Not physically incredible; emotionally incredible.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: I'm probably in a very good spot emotionally.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: You know, I think I have to start prior to walking down the street.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Well I always dreamt that they would come up with this magical pill.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Oh, I used food to help everything.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: Well physically I no longer can do that. That's been removed.
...
DOREEN CORRADO, CSW: I think the one of the things I would say is to really look at it and think about it a long time.
...
DAVID FOLK THOMAS: Doreen, thank you for sharing your story with us today.
