    (Rocky Hill) Richard M. Corr, Esq., Vice President of Operations and Planning for Connecticut Attorneys Title Insurance Company (CATIC), the nation's second largest Bar-Relateder, recently addressed the Middlesex County Bar Association on the subject of the public's perception of attorneys.

    Corr noted that the entertainment industry and news media play an enormous role in shaping negative images of the profession. He preceded to outlined two programs that stress the importance of local bar associations' involvement in dealing with the media

    The National Association of Bar-Related#174, Title Insurers (NABRTI®) Public Relations program is designed to assist bar associations in dealing with the media and supporting attorneys through public relations. The program urges local bar associations to report unfair media treatment of attorneys to the state bar association so that it can respond. According to Corr "The key purpose of the program is to establish a working relationship between the local bar association and the local press. The ultimate goal is to create a sense of fairness, not prevent criticism."

    In addition to NABRTI®'s public relation program, Corr discussed CATIC's Bar-Related® advertising and Local Bar Association Support programs. Commenting on the latter, Corr said "We (CATIC) think local bar associations play a key role in influencing the public's perception of attorneys. Our support program makes tradeshow equipment and a broad bar association message available, free of charge, to any bar association interested in attending consumer and relevant functions to promote the role of attorneys." Corr concluded by discussing CATIC's advertising campaign, which is appearing in local papers and on billboards throughout southern New England. The campaign, targeting individuals planning to purchase a home, highlights the benefits an attorney provides in the real estate transaction.
