   The event encouraged the Protestant mission movement in the United States, and four years later the first American mission organization was formed, according to Dr. Phil Corr, pastor of First Congregational Church in Charles City.
   
   "There are various events going on between now and the end of the year to both commemorate the Haystack Prayer and to use it to motivate people to pray for the Great Commission," he said, referencing Matthew 24:14, which encourages Christians to spread God's word.
   
   At noon on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at the Evangelical Free Ministry Center, 523 N. Main St., Corr and Pastor Mike Downey of the Evangelical Free Church will lead a prayer group.

   Corr emphasized that everyone is welcome.
   
   "This is for members of any church, or no church, as well as pastors.These people (from the Haystack Prayer) weren't just pastors when they prayed," he said.
   
   Events are planned worldwide to honor the anniversary of the Haystack Prayer.
   
   "My vision is to see small prayer groups forming to pray for fulfillment of the Great Commission, not just in the U.S., but around the world," he said."There's a lot of people that can be prayed for."
   
   Corr has used the Internet as a resource to get the word about about the Haystack Pray and the local event.He also blogs, or keeps an online journal, on the Web site.For more information on the Haystack Prayer, visit www.haystack06.org.
   
   "(People) have an opportunity to be a part of something really big that God is doing in our community and our world at the present time," Corr said.
