The colleagues started the program after learning about the Veterans' Oral History Project from Riverside's Martin Luther King High School teacher John Corona.

Corona coordinates what is now the largest veterans oral history program in the United States. He explained that the idea started seven years ago when he assigned his U.S. history students to interview a veteran from World War II or Korea.
When the class reported they had difficulty locating veterans from that generation, Corona began contacting veterans' organizations. Last year, 660 kids and 165 veterans participated in the project.
"It started as a grass-roots movement," he said, "and from there it got a life of its own."
World War II veteran Vi Cowden, 90, was one of the 114 female pursuit pilots authorized to fly fighter planes throughout the continental United States during the war. Cowden's sharp blue eyes sparkled with excitement as she shared her war stories with the students.

Corona said it was the personal touch that grabbed the attention of students.
"This is a project that reaches across generations," Corona said.
