A couple of days before the seminar, UNO associate director of outreach Ishmael Corona said by telephone that the process to become a U.S. citizen is complicated, often lengthy, and doesn't apply to everyone. He did offer some basic information, however.
CITIZENSHIP BASICS For starters, not everyone qualifies to be a citizen, he said. One must first be a resident. "You have to be a resident for five years, or three years if you're married to a U.S. citizen to become U.S. citizen," he said. Or he said, a resident can apply through a family members such as parents, siblings or children older than 21. But just getting resident status can take a long time, he said, feeding the illegal immigration problem. The process takes about two years on average but can take much longer, he said. -
