    Jocelyn Cornwell studied for her Phd, later published as Hard-Earned Lives: accounts of health and illness from East London (Tavistock, 1984) at Queen Mary College, London University.

    After a period as a research fellow at the Open University and the King's Fund Centre Jocelyn worked in NHS community health services.In 1990 she joined the Audit Commission's Health Studies directorate, where she researched and directed national value for money studies.

    In 1999, she worked for the Department of Health helping to establish the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI).Jocelyn subsequently became CHI's deputy and then acting chief executive.She now works independently on national initiatives to improve the quality of clinical services.

    She is a Visiting Fellow in Health and Social Care at the LSE and a trustee of the Mental Health Foundation, CONNECT, and the Picker Institute.
