My friend and colleague Frank Cornwall of Defense Associates in Connecticut got one of these little pistols right after they came out.He immediately found it to be a hit with female students.

"One female nurse tried my Ultra Compact 9mm at a shooting clinic, and liked it so much she went right out and bought one," he says.Frank's was one of the first of these guns, however, and he experienced some magazine problems with certain hollow points, but found it reliable with ball.When he visited me subsequently I asked him to bring along his gun and magazines to compare to mine.

Heart Of The Gun

It was clear that his original Metalform magazines were configured differently from the ones that had come with the test gun."I went to the Metalform company in Connecticut," Frank told me, "and they were very interested in the problems I was having.The feed lips had been a little too tight, and the follower design not quite right for the steep feed ramp.The gun worked with the full-length 9mm magazines they made up for the Government-size 9mm, so I asked them to make me some of those to fit the Ultra."

Frank's gun worked flawlessly with my magazines.It would appear that Metalform listened to constructive criticism and responded with a magazine for the compact 9mm 1911 which functions perfectly.Frank says he still gets the occasional misfeed with some very short 90-grain handloads, but that can happen with almost any 9mm auto.

Frank also had a slightly larger right-hand-only thumb safety installed on his Ultra Compact, along with an arched mainspring housing and a shorter trigger, which he felt were better suited to small hands.

Frank Cornwall Mr. Cornwall is one of two ASAA Senior Staff members instructing on the East Coast.He began working with ASAA in 1986 and LFI the following year.He was appointed the regional training coordinator for both schools in 1990.In 1992 he became one of only a dozen shooters to successfully complete the ASAA Combat Master (Handgun) course since it was devised in 1981, the following year he become one of five, off-site ASAA instructors.He is one of only two people who is both an ASAA Rifle & Pistol Instructor and authorized to conduct the firearms training for LFI1.

Mr. Cornwall has been certified by the National Law Enforcement Training Center as a Handgun Retention and Disarming Instructor and holds NRA Instructor ratings for Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun.He is full voting member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI) and a NRA Life Member.

Northwestern CT Friends of NRA 5th Annual Fund Raising Banquet and AuctionOctober 6

With the help of instructors M.G.A. (My Guardian Angel) Charlie, Frank (the course host who lent me his Glock when my own firearm developed a major malfunction1), and Mas, I discovered that, yes, indeedy, I was fine, and off to an excellent start in the development of safe gun handling, shooting form, and accuracy.There were brilliant tips on how to best handle and use my firearm, even in the most stressful of circumstances. (Take note: all enrollees are carefully screened before acceptance into this course.Mas and Frank gave us clear instructions to keep our training skill-set out of the hands of potential criminals.) My fellow classmates were consistently supportive.My mate, who recommended this course to me, patiently tolerated my pre-class jitters, and graciously accepted the recognition of his status in the gun industry Mas brought to the attention of the attendees.
