"Students need to understand other cultures, especially considering what is going on in the world today," said Patricia Cornman, assistant to the director at the office of international affairs.
According to Cornman, many students do not realize how easy it is to study abroad. They believe it will hold them back academically and that there is no way to afford it, when the opposite is true.
"We have so many connections with English-speaking places in non-English speaking countries," Cornman said. The world really is wide open right now for IUP students and for the cost of regular IUP tuition.
"This is the time in your life to do this. In a career you are lucky to get two weeks off for a vacation. Doing this will help to understand global aspects to tell an employer, it will show one has ambition, independence, potential and also the opportunity to make worldwide contacts."
...
"Planning is the key to a successful experience," Cornman said. "How well you achieve your personal and academic objectives depends on your choice of the right country, institution and program."
It is possible for almost any student to do some type of study abroad or student exchange.
To take advantage of IUP's Study Abroad Program students must have at least a GPA of 2.5. Financial aid applies if it is an IUP program because it is based on IUP's in-state tuition and fees, room and board. All loans, grants and scholarships currently received should also apply.
...
"Just as there are many options available, students who are flexible about building their experience are usually the most successful in finding them rewarding," Cornman said.
"Participating in an exchange is a good idea for a warm-up for graduate school or a career," Cornman said.
Students interested in studying abroad or doing an exchange can attend the 6 O'clock Series Feb. 3. They can also set up a meeting with Cornman via email at pcornman@iup.edu, with Michele Petrucci, Foreign Student Advisor at michelep@iup.edu or by telephone at 724-357-2295.
