Joe Cornish, the senior stewardship manager, said there have been some incidences of stone theft on properties cared for by Historic New England.

ss iconStone walls: Uniquely New England

"I have heard stories of landscapers at night removing stone walls," said Cornish, who has been with Historic New England for about 10 years."They're dry-laid, so really you just have to pick them up and put them in the back of your truck."

Cornish recalled a stone theft at a South Shore farm a decade ago.He said someone stole a few stones at a time, and after a matter of weeks, the thief had taken an abundance of them.

With so many stone walls in the area, Cornish said people might forget that there's history within the walls.

"Their characteristics are defining features of New England agriculture's past," said Cornish.
