Mr. Cornish served as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1941-45.
In 1956, Dr. Cornish received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Michigan. He then began his 29 years as a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1984 and continued to publish and consult in his field.
Dr. Cornish had a deep interest in education and a particular dedication to students. He taught the first course in industrial toxicology and was responsible for the development of the Toxicology Program at the University of Michigan. Under his leadership, the Program evolved into one of the most respected in the country. He was named "Educator of the Year" in 1980 by the Society of Toxicology, of which he was a charter member. He was a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, an officer for the Fan Association of North America, an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Ypsilanti, Past President of the Ypsilanti Historical Society and a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 241 for many years.
He was dedicated to his family and grandchildren. His gentle manner and sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew him. -
