Paul Corning, one of the nation's leading authorities on helping businesses develop electronic-commerce strategies, has been confirmed as a featured speaker at Associated Equipment Distributors' (AED) second annual Executive Forum, Sept. 20-22 in Chicago.
Corning is executive vice president, Midwest region, with WaveBend, the Business and Technology Solutions subsidiary of BDO Seidman, an international accounting and consulting firm. He has more than 20 years of experience with information systems, including stints as a programmer, consultant and project manager for Amoco.
WaveBend's clients include distributors, manufacturers, retailers and transportation companies. The firm specializes in business-to-business integration services, helping companies find ways to leverage information technology into a competitive advantage.
At the AED conference, titled Executive Forum: e-Business 2000, Corning will help senior-level executives better understand how to think about the Internet in strategic terms. He notes that although executives are reading about e-commerce daily, they still find the subject difficult to grasp.
"They're typically both intrigued and intimidated by e-commerce," Corning says. "They know they ought to be doing something themselves, but it's difficult for them to get their arms around the subject."
Corning urges businesses to start by asking two questions: (1.) How will the market in which I compete be different in 3-5 years as a result of the Internet, and (2.) how do I position myself in that market of the future so I am more profitable, distribute more product and provide better customer service?
Conventional wisdom holds that e-commerce solutions generally come with a hefty price tag. While there is some truth to that, Corning maintains that there are solutions that fit everyone's bottom line.
"A distributor can make a fairly small investment that at least gets his company in the e-commerce game," he says. "That investment will put him on the path to a bigger solution."
However, Corning admonishes distributors not to make one common mistake. "Thinking, 'I can afford to wait' is a big misconception," he says. "Distributors need to be aware of what their manufacturers, customers and competitors are doing with e-commerce and respond appropriately. At the very least, AED members should be asking themselves, 'What should I be doing right now?'"
The construction equipment industry will find plenty of answers at the AED forum, which is attracting some of the top names in both e-commerce and distribution.

Corning is the latest addition to an Executive Forum program that includes three authorities on both electronic commerce and the construction equipment marketplace: Mike Marks, Dan Kaplan and Kirk Landers. -
