    "The risk of employee theft is at its highest this time of the year," said Gary Cornick, CEO of IntegriView, a Provo-based company that provides an assessment tool for screening out job applicants who are high risk for theft. "Employers are streamlining the interview process and lowering employment standards to quickly bring on additional staff for the holiday season."

    IntegriView recently released an updated version of its assessment tool, Applicant Review, which is a multiple-choice questionnaire administered to job applicants. Usually administered during the second phase of the hiring process, the tool identifies applicants who are dishonest and at a higher risk for stealing, said Cornick. The assessment can be completed online, at a company-installed kiosk or with old-fashioned paper and pencil.

    According to Cornick, the assessment takes 15-20 minutes to complete and the online results are nearly instant. After the information is scored, the results go directly to the hiring manager. The report includes histogram charts, which show exactly where the applicant falls within a national sample group and within a subgroup of similar retail establishments

    "The employer has all the percentages and can determine the level of risk they want to take," Cornick said.

    Only 18 percent of retailers use a computer-assisted interview to weed out potential thieves, while 28 percent use a paper honesty assessment, according to the National Retail Security Survey, which does not endorse any specific process or screening product.

    The majority of retailers-86 percent-verify past employment, while 85 percent utilize criminal background checks, 76 percent check personal references and 42 percent perform credit checks, according to the report.

    "We have found that applicants for these types of positions are 16 to 22-years-old, on average. Criminal records, employment history and a credit history are just not available for that age group-they don't have much of a past history we can look at," Cornick said.

    Additionally, criminal background checks can take several days, while pre-employment assessment results are usually available within a few minutes. "The time factor is significant," Cornick said.

    When used in conjunction with interviews and reference checks, Cornick said the Applicant Review can help retailers reduce the amount of inventory disappearing from store shelves.

    The assessment was originally developed in 1983 by a Brigham Young University professor, along with loss prevention consultants. According to Cornick, the assessment has been researched and validated repeatedly since that time.
