However, Cornick is available for work as an independent consultant.
Incoming President of the Michigan Science Leaders Association, Cornickworks with K-8 teachers, helping them to use technology to analyze MEAP scores to identify what students need to succeed.Cornick has recently completed work on a grant in which she used a study group approach to professional development.Teachers formed small clusters around a topic of interest and spent time reading, discussing, and learning in depth about the subject chosen.Cornick has determined that this type of professional development is more powerful and effective than traditional inservice or workshop presentations.Groups in her study chose to examine a range of topics such as digital cameras, mathematics and science computer programs, portfolio assessment, and web page design.Presently, one group is looking at Lego Mindstorm kits and learning about programming and the way people think about their own learning.Cornick uses technology in everything she does and constantly models its use.
The Alliance offers professional development for AIMS (Activities Integrating Math and Science). There are a number of AIMS facilitators in Michigan who are available to do staff development in half-day or after-school sessions.
Cornick is particularly interested in mathematics, science, the evolution of student-teacher belief systems, and equity issues. She worked with Brenda Earhart on Connecting with the Learner : An Equity Toolkit and wrote Project ASPIRE (Access to Scientific Professions : Insure Representation and Equity).Project ASPIRE is a notebook of materials for use in four or five presentations regarding the needs of underrepresented groups.Cornick is available to do staff development using these materials.
She is also the co-author of Facilitating Change in School Mathematics, a monograph published by the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM).
