Reflections from the past bring a pleasant feeling and smile to the face of Odessa College department chair and professor Dr. Judy Cornes.

Preparing to retire following the 2004 summer session, Dr. Cornes looks back at her time spent at OC and sees a lifetime of significant events and memories.

Dr. Cornes came to OC from Southern Illinois University after receiving her Ph.D. in 1973.

"I have been in the same office since I came to Odessa >College 31 years ago," Cornes said. "When I first came to OC, I used an Underwood manual typewriter."

Since that time, she has watched distinct improvements evolve at the college.

"Technology has been a major advancement at OC," Cornes said. "I used that Underwood typewriter for seven years, had it replaced with an electric typewriter and later with a primitive but useful computer."

She believes these vicarious improvements have made communication easier >and have been time savers for both students and faculty.

"Internet and e-mail have made things less complicated as far as inputting grades and associating with my students," Cornes said.

Reflecting on her time at Odessa College, Cornes compares her years at 'OC' to U.S. and world history events that have occurred over the years.

"President Nixon resigned the first year I taught here, and of course, his vice president resigned shortly prior to the president's resignation," Cornes said. "There were anti-war protests and streakers. When I stop to think about how many presidents ago that was, I realize all these events were quite a while back."

When she retires, Cornes plans to focus on her personal life by, making time for herself, taking care of unfinished work and spending time with the important people in her life.

"I would like to have time to think without interruption and confusion," Cornes said. "I am almost finished writing two books, 'Madness in 19th -Century Literature' and 'Alcohol and The Movies.' I will also spend time getting reacquainted with my husband and allow him to see what I look like."

Dr. Cornes will leave Odessa College with a lifetime of memories.

"I am going to miss my friends. I have known some of them half of my life," Cornes said.
