Carol Cooper - Secretary

Carol Cooper grew up in the suburbs of Bethlehem, PA - surrounded by corn fields and small farms. Watching field after field give way to housing developments like the one she lived in instilled in her the passion to save farmlands. Her professional life hasn't worked out exactly the way she thought, and she ended up working for Metro focused on sustainable transportation issues, which is really still related to farmland preservation - land use patterns and transportation are inextricably linked. She loves being able to contribute to the viablility of local farming through her efforts with the Cascade Harvest Coalition.

"The employers didn't feel that any of their senior people would ever give up their parking space," says Metro's Carol Cooper.

"We're thrilled," said Carolyn Cooper, president of the Friends of the Carrboro Branch Library."Our mission is to promote the library so we can serve the community. [The new hours mean] we can better serve the community," Cooper said.

Cooper added that longtime Friends board members and other volunteers "have been working toward this goal for years."

Cooper became Friends' president six months ago, but has volunteered, off and on, over the past five years she has been using the library.

"There have been a lot of requests for the library to be open more," Cooper said.

Many of the requests were for the library to open on Saturday when most people are off work and children are out of school, Cooper added.

"Having two weekend days is a definite advantage in terms of getting peoples' needs met," Cooper said.
