Norman Cook

Council members Cheryl Steele, Norman Cook and Mickie Halbrook voted in favor of removing four members of the volunteer board at the council's Dec. 20 meeting, despite Mayor Randy Jones' warnings that the action could set a "dangerous precedent."

We immediately decided to invite Mr Norman Cook to be our first Honorary Member and I am delighted to inform you that he has accepted.This is one very small way that we can express our gratitude to Norman for all the help and inspiration he still continues to give the Council.

The formal business was followed by a thought-provoking talk by Norman Cook, BA, FSA, Director of The Guildhall Museum, on the future of museums in Kent.

At the AGM held at Gravesend on the 7th November the Council heard with great regret that our Chairman, Mr Cook, wished to relinquish the chair, owing to his forthcoming retirement.

Norman C Cook, BA, V-P SA, FMA, was elected in November 1967 and his wise counsel and enthusiastic leadership have been responsible for the expanding policy and increasing influence of the Council.He will be keeping in close touch with us and we hope he will visit us whenever possible.It has been a privilege to work under his guidance and I am well aware how difficult it will be to follow him.I know you will all join me in thanking him for his inspired Chairmanship, for the last three! years and wishing him a very happy and well deserved retirement.

In collaboration with Norman Cook of the Guildhall Museum, the two worked to merge their respective institutions into the new Museum of London.In 1957 he founded a second journal, Medieval Archaeology which he edited for many years.He wrote The Phoenicians in 1962.In 1965 he also became acting director of the new Museum of London.
