Even with the changes, instructional time for students should actually make an increase, CHS faculty member Janice Cook added.

"The schedule under consideration has 8,842 instructional minutes for one class period for the full academic year (180 days)," she noted via e-mail.

Marcia Hutto from West Elementary School and Janice Cook from Cullman High School are the Cullman City School System teachers of the year.
    ...
Cook is the Cullman High School librarian and was a little concerned about being named a teacher of the year when she is not actually in a classroom.

"That was a conflict for me, but my principal assured me the selection committee talked about that and decided they still wanted to name me a teacher of the year," Cook said."So that was a nice compliment for me."

Cook has been at the high school since 1975 and has helped get technology in the school.

"We didn't have copy machines when I started," she said.

Cook got the school's first computers which used tape instead of memory.

"We've gone from manual typewriters to the Internet," she said."I've been lucky over the years to have supportive principals who have let me make these purchases."

    ...
Cook works hard and has helped us writes lots of grants for the system."

Next, the teacher's names will go to a district selection committee.

A state selection committee will choose a state teacher of the year this spring.
