Speaking to the Times, Alan Cook, the chief executive of manufacturing firm Cobham, claimed that a lack of understanding between the two sectors could mean that some children are not fully aware of the opportunities on offer to them.
Mr Cook, a former electrician's apprentice, is now championing such courses himself.
He said: "Apprenticeships are really going through a resurgence and that is starting to make a big difference for companies like ours."
The skills which can be developed through apprenticeships will be vital to ensuring the future of the UK economy, Mr Cook added.
