    He said four groups had ridden the tram these holidays, two from out of town and a couple of local groups.

    General manager Jeff Constantine said reaching this target in just over four years justified the faith of those who first conceived the idea of building a tourist trams as a means of boosting tourism numbers in Portland back in 1996.

    "The support from the overwhelming majority of Portland residents and businesses has been a major factor in the trams continuing succes."

    Mr Constantine made special mention of the commitment of the large group of volunteers who had enabled the tram to operate 364 days a year and travel more than 12,000kms, since it was officially opened in March 2002.

    "We will use the tickets to promote Portland and the cable trams in future marketing campaigns," he said.

    Five hundred tickets were presented to Portland Cable Trams at the tram depot on Monday.
