It was a homecoming of sorts for 1982 Bowie High graduate Sean M. Connors when the 20-year U.S. Navy veteran returned to Maryland Friday as the commander of the USS McFaul, a 334-crew Navy destroyer.

Cmdr. Connors has been in charge of the ship since Sept. 2004 and as part of the Community Outreach Program the ship traveled from its home base of Norfolk, Va. to Baltimore for the 20th Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference.

Connors said his overall responsibility is the readiness of the ship and well being of the crewmembers of the USS McFaul.

While traveling to Baltimore, the Captain and his crew were able to share the rest of the trip with family and friends during the Family and Friends Day.

Connors said the day allows loved ones to gain a better understanding of what their daughter, son, wife or husband goes through on a daily basis.

,,I see the crew with their chests puffed out and the family and friends day gives them a sense of pride,, Connors said.

Connors, father and friends were able to join him and experience the trip with him to Baltimore when the ship stopped off in Annapolis. ,,Sean grew up with my son and has become an outstanding young man,, Sen.

Connors, father, who did not want to be named, said that when his son comes home all he talks about is his crew.

Connors has gained many awards over his career but said that it is not about him but about his crew.Connors was deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1991 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Connors graduated and received his commission from the Naval Academy in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography.In June 1989 he reported to the Naval Postgraduate School where he graduated with a Master of Science in Nuclear Physics in Sept. 1991.

Connors has a 15-year-old daughter named Kili.

The Navy says USS Winston S. Churchill commander Todd Leavitt and USS McFaul commander Sean Connors will face administrative action, but won't lose their commands.
