Conner assumes command of battalion
- Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Conner of Kilgore accepted command of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) during a change of command ceremony on July 18 at Fort Campbell, Ky. Conner returns to the 5th Group after serving the past two years at the Pentagon as the eucom-centcon desk chief in the special operations division of the operations directorate, joint chiefs of staff. Conner, a veteran of Desert Storm, served as commander of ODA 532. After graduating from the Russian Language School at the Presidio in Monterey, Calif. and the Command and General Staff Colleges, he was again assigned to serve as the 5th Group AS S-3 and B Company Commander of the 2nd Battalion as well as the 5th Group S-3. Conner's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with "V" device (for valor), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Joint and Army commendation and achievement medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal and the Saudi Arabia and Kuwait Liberation Medals. Conner is a senior parachutist and is the recipient of the Combat Infantryman Badge. This Green Beret unit traces its roots back to WWII and Vietnam. Its soldiers are among the most decorated in the nation. Since Desert Storm, the group has seen combat operations in Somalia and was called in for support operations in Haiti. In the wake of Sept. 11, 2001, the 5th Group was called upon to play a major role in the war on terrorism. It was the first American unit deployed into Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom. From October 2001 until March 2002, detachments within the group conducted unconventional warfare against the Taliban and Al-Quaida forces. Within six months the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) effectively destroyed the popular base of the Taliban government and toppled the terrorist-sponsored state of Afghanistan.
