UNSUNG HERO IN NATIONAL FINAL BBC SPORTS AWARDS THE Island collected prestigious awards during the week. West Wight Swimming Club's head coach Trevor Collins won the unsung hero category while Ellen MacArthur was voted yachtsperson of the year in the BBC South Sports Awards.

   Collins, who works for SP, had been invited to attend as one of six people shortlisted. This award recognises the efforts of those in the community who, on a voluntary basis, make a difference to local sport. Collins was nominated by SP work colleague Tina Hyder and West Wight SC for his outstanding achievements and commitment to swimming, now spanning more than 25 years.

   Before his move to the Centre of Excellence for Swimming in Bath, Mew was coached by Collins to Hampshire, southern county and national titles, Island Games champion and record holder, multiple British junior record holder, as well as international schools and European junior medals.

   Collins has tirelessly supported the West Wight SC in many forms since its inception including physically helping to get the pool built in Freshwater in the 1970s, assisting with fundraising events and serving as chairman and vice-chairman of the club committee, all on top of his duties as head coach. He conducts training sessions every weekday evening after work either in the pool or gym, as well as Sunday mornings and evenings and spends many other weekends attending Island-based or mainland competitions. This year has been a very successful one for Collins, with Rosie Gard and Lucy Wareham both performing outstandingly, returning from the Island Games in Shetland with gold and silver medals.

   Collins and MacArthur now go on to attend the star-studded Sports Review of the Year show at the BBC Television Centre in London on Sunday, where the overall winners for the UK will be announced in the programme, which also reveals the national sports personality of the year.

   Last year's award went to swimming coach Trevor Collins who was presented with the accolade at the BBC Sports Personality show in December
   
   Mr Collins has done everything from helping to dig the pool to training future champions at West Wight Swimming Club on the Isle of Wight.

   West Wight Head Coach Trevor Collins has won the Unsung Hero Award at the BBC Sports Review of the Year Show.
   
   The committed swim coach was invited to the national final after BBC South presented him with the regional award just one week previously. He was unaware he was receiving the national award, which recognises the efforts of volunteers who make a difference to sport in their local community, until he was presented with the honour live on air.
   
   Collins has been a major driver of swimming on the Isle of Wight, tirelessly supporting the West Wight Swimming Club in many forms since its inception over 25 years ago. In the 1970s, he was physically involved in the building of the Freshwater pool and has continued to assist with fund-raising events and served as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the club committee, all on top of his duties as Head Coach.
   
   Every Sunday and weekday evening he conducts training sessions in the pool or gym and spends many weekends attending island-based or mainland competitions. Even when not at the pool, a lot of time and effort is spent planning training programmes and competitions for the season ahead - all on a voluntary basis.
   
   Members of the West Wight swimming club watched their coach receive the honours live from their annual awards ceremony - the first one Collins has missed in the organisation's history.
