Principal Travis Collins said the custodian was on her way in to work when she noticed the bear hanging out in a field off Kims Cove Road, the main road used to access the school.
Although the bear could not be seen from campus, Collins said, it is estimated the bear was between a quarter and one-half mile away.
Upon being notified of the bear sighting, Collins suspended outside play for the remainder of the day and notified Canton police officers and wildlife services, whom agreed to be on site as students were dismissed just as a precaution, Collins said.
I also informed parents and guardians of students who walk or ride bikes to school of the bears presence in our vicinity.
Although the bear did not come into view or contact of any children, Collins said, if there is ever a threat, we have to do everything we can to ensure their safety just in case.
Since the sighting, Collins said one custodian has been keeping an eye out for the bear, occasional driving around the perimeter of school property to ensure the bear did not come closer. As of late yesterday afternoon, the bear had not been seen since the initial sighting.
Thankful that no students were harmed, Collins said bear sightings are one of those fun things that happen in the mountains. We take precautions, but we also have to be able to smile and enjoy these types of things, he said.
