  HCC project manager Tracy Collins said: "The interim event was about celebrating the work that the project has done so far.

  Tracy said: "The earlier bowel cancer is picked up the greater the chance of survival. We want to get as many people as possible diagnosed at stage 1 or stage 2 where the prognosis is much better. People in Sunderland often say they are reluctant to take part in screening at first but many change their minds when the HCC volunteers explain how vital it can be."
  
  Over the next two years, everyone aged 60 to 69 who is registered with a Sunderland GP will be invited to participate in the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
