   Many of the men who were looking for last minute gifts hit book stores searching for cook books or writings by their significant other's favorite author, said Sandra Collins, manager of Books A Million in the mall. Collins' store saw more customers this weekend than it did on Black Friday after Thanksgiving, traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year, the one that begins the holiday buying madness.
   
   "We're busier at the end of the season. Books aren't the things they buy first," Collins said.

   Sandra Collins, general manager at Books-A-Million, said gift cards are thoughtful and they enable people to get what they want.
   
   "They're good for stocking stuffers, and if you have someone pop in to visit you unexpectedly, you have the gift card there."
   
   Local store managers said the cards are popular with shoppers across the board.
   
   Collins said she was surprised that so many gift cards had been sold in the short period of time the store has been open. The new location opened Oct. 20 at the Mall of Abilene, 4310 Buffalo Gap Road.
   
   "They're very popular in this area," said Collins. "We're going through an awful lot."
