Rodney Collins who worked for the Record Mirror at the time, who I had met during my days of Radio London when he used to work in a local newspaper somewhere then introduced him to the editor of Record Mirror and he then became a columnist with Record Mirror. He said to me one day "you should go out and work on Radio Northsea I can fix you up with it, I've been in contact with the bloke" I said "I'm not too sure about that" and he said "well come out there with me this time because I'm going out they have invited me out", "how do we get there?", "oh we meet Roger Day at Gatwick and we fly over to Holland" I said "that's something interesting". We get over there, we arrive in Scheveningen you know, somewhere like that, stay overnight in a hotel because it's too stormy, get on this boat and the Swiss man in charge of it said "well you're not staying in the hotel another night because I'm not paying for you to stay there so you're getting on the boat". So we had a twelve hour journey across the North sea, Rodney Collins was green he turned absolutely green and he let go, we were standing on deck we were the only two left apart from the drunken Captain who weren't sea sick and he said "I can't take any more" and he let go and I grabbed hold of him by the scruff' of the neck and held him on the boat because he would have slipped off; it was all I could do.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of RODNEY COLLINS as our Press Communications Coordinator.

Rodney is well known to people in broadcasting with over thirty years experience in both the music and radio industries. He joins us from Manx Radio, where he was Director of Programmes from late 1998 until recently.

His career began in the late 1960s as News Editor at Record Mirror, one of the leading pop music publications at that time. He later joined Associated TV (the contractor for the Midlands and for London at the weekend) and their subsidiary - Pye Records as a PR executive. During this time he worked closely with most major recording artistes of the day, many of whom he has retained a close working relationship with. In 1971 he moved to the BBC to become Publicity Officer at Radio One and Radio 2, working with all the stationís key DJs, many of them still on the air today - such as Terry Wogan and Jimmy Young.

Later in the 1970s Rodney moved to Radio Luxembourg as News Editor and was responsible for helping set up their Atlantic 252 station, which broadcasts from Ireland on Long Wave.
    ...
Rodney has lived in Peel, the Island's foremost fishing village (and only true 'city') with his wife Jackie and daughter Sarah for the last eighteen months and is looking forward to working with the station: "This is a very exciting project and has vast potential. I am sure that it can become far bigger than either Atlantic or Radio Luxembourg," commented Rodney, who has also ran radio stations in Glasgow and London. "The launch of Atlantic 252 was an exciting time, but this station can change the face of radio and make a huge impact on listening, much as Radio Luxembourg and the pirate radioships once did."

"Rodney's primary role is to ensure the station gets lots of publicity in other media, especially the press which will be essential to ensure the station has a huge impact when it launches," said the project's founder, Paul Rusling.
    ...
"I have known Rodney for many years in connection with our work at other large radio stations and his wide knowledge of the press and radio, not to mention his hefty contacts book will be of huge benefit to our station and, indirectly, the Isle of Man. We aim to be a very high profile station and there is no one better suited to managing our press relations than Rodney."
