"It's the worst of all possible scenarios," said Peter Collins, president of Collins Flowers on Main Street.

"The Blizzard of '78 closed Massachusetts roads, and last year, we had a foot of snow on Feb. 12. It's either zero degrees or a snowstorm."

Collins, who has worked in the family business for 27 years, spent a good part of the day before his busiest day of the year double-wrapping bouquets scheduled for deliveries to teachers in the city school district. He said his drivers made several dozen early deliveries to city teachers who were expected to have a day off today.

"When people call today, we're suggesting they have their flowers delivered today," Collins said.

About 300 customers placed Valentine's Day orders last month, Collins said, adding that he was planning to dispatch eight trucks, starting early this morning, to make the promised deliveries. He said employees would arrive at the shop by 4:30 a.m., and trucks would be on the road by 7:30 a.m.

"Today, we're getting the deliveries organized, route information for the trucks," Collins said Tuesday.

In better weather, if no one is at home, a delivery person might leave a bouquet on a porch or in a neighbor's breezeway. However, when temperatures hover in the single digits or lower, a rose will die in 30 seconds, and flowers like tulips and lilies are similarly vulnerable.

"It's one huge headache you don't need on the busiest day of the year in every flower shop," Collins said.
