Inspired by a relative who endured abuse and poverty at a time when there were no domestic violence shelters, Linda Collins has devoted her life to improving the lives of abused and battered women.

    ...
Influenced in the mid-1970s by the women's rights movement, Collins first became a professional advocate for battered women at Women in Transition in Philadelphia. She then joined the Women's Center of Montgomery County and became its first executive director in 1982.

"In 1988, my work for justice took me to law school at Temple University," she said. "My law career has focused on providing legal services to battered women and the elderly. Friends call me the social worker with a law degree."

Since 1993 she has been executive director of Laurel House, which was opened by the women's center and became a separate entity. Collins also is a member of S.P.I.R.I.T., a volunteer organization started in Abington Township. Organization members ride along with area police departments to speak with and provide resources to victims of domestic violence.

Collins, who is to receive the award for public service, credits those who work with her for her success. "Choosing me for an honor only honors the people I've worked with," she said. "I would never be anywhere without these people."

Penn State's Sandler - former vice president and dean of academic affairs at Juniata College, former assistant dean of Gettysburg College and former faculty member at the University of Vermont, said she was honored by the selection.

"I was really overwhelmed," she said.
