Along with Brent Larlee, Collins and Goodale started a business that has shown great promise.
    ...
Collins, who studied engineering and mathematics at the University of Maine, spent eight years at an engineering firm in Boston and observed that his employer had received requests for visualization, but had not taken an interest in pursuing the work. So he set off on his own in 1995, seeing a better outlet for his talents.

"We're applying technology to an age old problem. Since the days of the cavemen, people drew pictures. Whether you're trying to communicate something very complicated to a jury - say a patent infringement suit involving a microscopic medical device - or creating a training or sales tool for the pharmaceutical industry where a 23-year old sales representative has to have almost a peer-to-peer conversation with a physician [about] how a drug works inside the human body ... it's just a far greater teaching tool," said Collins.
    ...
Over the last five years, Animation Technologies has worked on well over 200 cases and Collins can offer numerous examples where a picture is worth a thousand words.

Latham & Watkins "had a patent infringement suit and needed to show the jury the technology behind video on demand services. They had to communicate a very intricate [message] about software architecture to the jury. What happens when you're in the hotel and you order 'Saving Private Ryan' - how does that movie get to your screen?," said Collins. "We've worked on medical malpractice cases, showing how a certain procedure should have gone and showing what actually did happen. It gives you the ability to show the jury - not intimate, not explain - but actually show them where the physician deviated from the standard of care."

The results thus far have been encouraging - or to be more precise, the verdict on Animation Technologies is that the company will continue to impress in courtroom.

"I can only think of two [cases] that we've quote-unquote lost," said Collins, who looks to defuse the hype even as his company's track record glows.
