Lance Collins, the Opinions editor of the University of Hawaii's student newspaper Ka Leo O Hawai'i, recently psychologized about people who say they "opposed the war but support the troops" -- in the most highfalutin terms, of course:

What [Ka Leo's] Lance [Collins] would call "refusing to engage in colonial morality" - for a professor to yell the word "f*ck" over and over again at another - others would call it running out of intelligent things to say (and if Trask and Lance really believed that line, then why don't they use another term besides the Western word, "f*ck?").
    ...
Yeah, that's from 2001, but Collins is still around at Ka Leo, and no, he hasn't joined the VRWC. Check out what Collins did to the author of the letter:

To correct Lance Collins' statement, "journalism is still having major difficulties with [Haunani] Trask" (Trask, media clash again - Oct. 29), I counter that it is Lance who has major difficulties with journalism.

First of all, Lance got most of the facts wrong with my own situation with Trask. He reported that "... five years ago, Greg Cromwell, friend of that haole philosophy student [Joey Carter], drew a caricature of Trask reading her poetry." The truth is, my free speech incident with Trask happened seven years ago, my name's not "Greg Cromwell," and I've never met Joey Carter. (I'm assuming he's using the word "friend" figuratively, not factually.)

Considering that a full report of these events is available in the newspaper archives in the Ka Leo building, it appears Lance wasn't bothered with facts getting in the way of his op-ed column.

You don't have to be a journalist to know that's just wrong.

Today, two years later, Lance Collins is Ka Leo's Opinions Editor.

Professor Michael Leitner, faculty adviser to Shaloha Hillel, demanded that cartoonist Casey Ishitani and Opinion editor Lance Collins be fired, and that the newspaper print a half-page apology, train all editors about civil rights, civil liberties and ethics.
