MORE THAN FORTY FIRST-TIME MARATHON RUNNERS GO THE EXTRA 26.2 MILES TO RAISE MONEY AND SAVE LIVES After six months training, Team Hope departs for the Honolulu Marathon on December 8 to benefit lifesaving research at City of Hope

LOS ANGELES - Most people will go the extra mile when it comes to saving a life. For 40 local men and women, 26.2 miles is just the beginning.

On December 8, more than 40 employees and supporters of City of Hope (COH) will face the ultimate challenge as members of the Team Hope Marathon Training Program.

"City of Hope employees devote their working lives to fighting life-threatening diseases," said Kevin Collins, director of Development for City of Hope. "Now they are joining other City of Hope supporters, choosing to challenge themselves outside of work for the same cause. All of the participants bring a shared passion and enthusiasm for City of Hope, to pounding the pavement through one of the most grueling fitness challenges a person can take on - all to help save lives."

In addition to the physical training, professional fund-raisers coach participants through the process of raising their minimum financial goals, providing clinics, materials and strategies to ensure their success. Through letter writing and personal solicitation, Team Hope members garner individual donations to raise the funds to get them to the marathon event. The group's members also have their own personal Web sites dedicated to accepting, tracking and showcasing contributions.

City of Hope is at the forefront of research in the nation to prevent, treat and cure cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases. Eighty-five cents of every dollar raised goes directly to research, encompassing essential investigation, clinical trials and treatment. In addition, money raised from Team Hope Marathon Training Program benefits local communities through City of Hope's collaborations with regional medical centers and academic institutions.
