   Ieshia Squires and Kenneth Collins graduated in 1999 and 2000 respectively, from Pamlico County High School. In 2000, they both entered military service; she joined the U.S. Army; he enlisted in the Navy.

   Kenneth sailed from Italy aboard the USS Porter, a destroyer equipped with guided missiles. Kenneth's ship fired missiles into Iraq supporting the ground invasion from Kuwait which included Ieshia.
   
   Once in Iraq, she was part of a unit supplying parts and equipment, everything from tires to engines, to the combat troops. She met, in person, the Army Quartermaster General and was the recipient of numerous awards.
   
   Kenneth worked primarily in the galley of his ship, trained to be a cook. He also became qualified to be an armed sentry. Both he and Ieshia were in service on Sept. 11, and went on full alert from that time on. While Kenneth slept in cramped quarters aboard his ship, Ieshia's first days in Iraq were spent in a sleeping bag with no bathrooms. On good days, the temperature would cool down to about ninety during the night. By 9 a.m., she could count on the temperature being at least 105.
   
   After surviving the mortar attacks, the heat, sandstorms, and witnessing human suffering that to most would be unimaginable, she says, "I don't talk about it much. I don't like to re-visit that."
   
   Ieshia and Kenneth eventually made their way back to Pamlico County after their tours of duty were completed.

   Kenneth, a criminal justice major, said, "I want to impact youth in my community. I am impacting people right now, trying to set a good example, going to school and working for an education."
   
   He plans to pursue a four-year degree, hoping to be a crime scene investigator. He has no plans to leave North Carolina, even looking ahead to retiring from a life in law enforcement to open a restaurant using the cooking skills he acquired aboard ship in the Navy.

   Kenneth S. Collins, 82, of Broadway Street, died yesterday at the Hospice House in Concord. He was born in Orange, N.J., the son of Timothy Patrick and Mae Agnes (Preisler) Collins. During World War II, he served in the 2nd Armored Division of the U.S. Army. He attended the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He was employed by Grand Union Co. as store manager and general merchandise marketing manager for 25 years before his retirement in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Greta (Gauthier) Collins; two daughters, Valerie Collins of Keene and Norine Van Leuven of Berlin; two sisters, Dorothy Baier of West Orange, N.J., and Rosalie Lindia of Old Forge, Pa.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Donald and John, and two sisters, Evelyn and Irma, died previously. There are no calling hours or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Concord Public Library, 45 Green St., Concord 03301.
