   Ken lead the sub-committee that overcame some initial reluctance, by outside authorities, to get involved due to the upcoming millennium celebrations.Once these had been settled the local community came on board and Ken played a leading role on the main committee, involving the Submarines Service, the Town Hall and BAE Systems amongst others.
   
   Come 2001, the Centenary Year, Ken was the face at the centre of the town's events covering the whole year.

   Ken has leant his full support to this, presenting various talks in the Dock Museum.
   
   Trips to Canada and the USA have furthered the Branch's reputation and at the last Valentines Blackpool weekend 55 couples from Barrow and other Branch's attended.
   
   Ken persuaded Ian Hillbeck that setting up the Barrow web site would be a good move forward and the latest count is 8000 hits per month.

   Ken was also in office when the branch decided to start its own newletter 5 years ago and what a bonus that has been with regular articles from Ken and others under the superb editorship of Ben Britten.

   What many do not appreciate perhaps is the considerable amount of time Ken has given on behalf of the branch but outside of branch meetings and away from the communal social life.He has represented the branch's interests at council meetings, various presentation evenings of other organisations, media briefs with TV and Press "overcoming his intense shyness" for the good of the branch and our image.
   
   During Ken's tenure Barrow Branch has become firmly established as one of the Association's movers and shakers.We have a dynamic Branch willing to put the effort into promoting all things good about the Association and Barrow.Other branches are beginning to target Barrow for a run ashore we had the Northern Ireland branch here in April, the Morecambe Bay branch will be here in May and the South Kent branch are visiting in July of this year alone.Ken can be rightfully proud of what he and the Barrow in Furness branch have achieved and look back with satisfaction at his chairmanship.Ken will be a hard act to follow and we sincerely hope he enjoys his retirement from the chair while continuing to honour us with his presence at meetings and other functions.
   
   This thank you could not be complete without also thanking Lilian for her 120% support to both Ken and the branch.They have jointly been great ambassadors for the Barrow in Furness Branch of the Submariners Association.
