WA Swimming Life Member, Joy Collins is congratulated by President, Peter Prunster, after the presentation of her award.

At the Annual General Meeting of the WA Swimming Association on 1 July 2001, familiar figure and long time stalwart of the Association, Joy Collins, was honoured by being voted to the position of Life Member.

The last time Life Membership to the Association was awarded was in 1994. Neither is the award made lightly. Nominations are reviewed by the Life Members' Committee against set selection criteria. They must then be presented to the Board before being voted on by the members at an Annual General Meeting. Joy Collins' nomination passed through all the due processes.

Joy has been an active member in many areas of the Association for more than twenty years. She first began her involvement by supporting her children at club level. From that early beginning, Joy developed her timekeeping and recording skills and became a District Referee. She later became a Starter and then Referee. She currently holds the rank of Referee and works both on deck and in the recording area at both club meets and WA Swimming meets.

Apart from fulfilling these Technical duties, Joy has established herself as an administrator holding various offices within the swimming community. Her interest as an administrator developed when she was appointed as the WASA records officer, a position she held for some years. Joy refined the record system. Her eye for detail ensured that all Western Australian swimmers, competing anywhere in the world received due recognition for records set. Much of Joy's system is still used today.

She was first elected to the Board of Western Australian Swimming as Competition Coordinator and later served as Minute Secretary. Joy worked faithfully in this capacity for many years. Her current role as Coordinator of State Selectors, an appointed position, is a job that she takes very seriously. Her detailed data collection ensures that all swimmers who meet the criteria are logged in, together with their times, dates, places and expectations for improvement. Presentation of State teams to the Board is based upon realistic recommendations and current times backed up with facts and figures.

Joy currently also holds the position of Coordinator of the Competition Planning Committee. She and the Committee endeavor to select sensible and workable programs. It is a difficult task in that there is a need to balance the portfolio satisfying coaches, administrators and technical officials' views as to what is the best program.

Selfless donation of her time during the WASA transition period in the nineties, meant that she was always on the phone answering queries from the office and from members of the Association in general.
