Missed field goal sends Collins to California
...
With just seconds left, Hawks' kicker Josh Collins - a South Surrey native - rushed onto the field.
The clock continued to tick.
With just three seconds left, the team wasn't nearly ready to snap the ball, so Collins elected to concede a five-yard penalty and let the clock run down.
"I knew I could still make it from 45 yards," he said.
It turned out to be the wrong call, as Collins pushed the attempt off the right crossbar.
...
And just like that, Collins was cut.
"We had a rough first half and the coach went off on us. I kind of got the brunt of it - he cut me five minutes after the game, in the locker room in front of the whole team," Collins, a former B.C. Junior Football League kicker, explained.
"He said ‘You're gone,' and told me to find my own way home from Boise.
"I'm OK with being cut - it happens in pro sports, but to have it done like that ... "
Kicking hasn't been one of the Hawks' strengths this season even without Collins. As a team, they're just 1-for-6 on field goal attempts. Stats and scapegoating aside, Collins holds no grudge against his former club, and after a few weeks at home in South Surrey, he's now signed with the Fresno, Calif.-based Central Valley Coyotes.
"What the coaches said was said in the heat of the moment, and they're still good guys, but I've got 12 weeks left in the season and I'm happy to be going to Fresno," Collins said.
Mostly, he's just happy to have another place to play - a place he hopes he can stay for more than a few weeks. He played last year in Birmingham, Ala. before signing with Cincinnati this year. Visa problems kept him in Canada before Cincinnati dealt him to Everett in mid-April.
"I'm just beyond tired. I've travelled through 12 states now. Hopefully I can stay here until the end of the season," Collins said. -
