MALVERN - Joseph D. Collins , 84 , of Lake Mohawk died Wednesday in his home after an extended illness. He was born Feb. 6 , 1917 , to Thomas and Kathryn ( Scary ) Collins in Jewett. Mr. Collins was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran serving in the 9th Air Force and a recipient of a Purple Heart. He was an operating engineer for Union Local 18 in Akron. A member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church , he belonged to the Knights of Columbus. Surviving are his wife , Betty Jane , whom he married Feb. 27 , 1943 ; a daughter , Marcia Close of Beloit ; two sons , Robert of Minerva , and Daniel of Miamisburg ; four grandchildren ; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son and two sisters , Mary Yanoviz and Frances Walters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Minerva with Monsignor John M. Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery in Malvern. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Carroll County Hospice.
