Joseph L. Collins , 80 , of Beverly , died unexpectedly March 3 at Beverly Hospital. He was the husband of Margaret M. ( Loughlin ) Collins , with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.
Born Sept. 17 , 1920 in Lynn , Mr. Collins was the son of the late Edward F. and Catherine I. ( Murphy ) Collins. He was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School , Class of 1939 and had resided in Beverly for the past 50 years.
Mr. Collins was employed as a tool and die maker at the General Electric Company , River Works Plant in Lynn for 43 years before retiring in 1982. He was also a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War and the Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Collins was a member of the former Knights of Columbus , John A. Degan Council 175 of Beverly and was an active member of the Beverly Little League where he was a coach for several years. A man of integrity and a great sense of humor , he enjoyed spending time with his family. Mr. Collins was a lifelong learner , an avid reader and had a curious mind.
In addition to his wife , he is survived by : three daughters and a son-in-law , Margaret M. Moss of Fairfax , Va. , Barbara A. Cunney of Beverly and Jody Collins and Jeffrey Milne , both of Manchester-by-the-Sea ; a son and daughter-in-law , Edward L. and Sally ( Tref ) Collins of Highlands Ranch , Colo. ; 12 grandchildren , John and Colin Cunney , Kathleen P. and Kerry M. Moss , Joseph T. Emma I. , Elaine M. , Michael W. , John L. , Kevin M. and Brendan J. Collins and Lindsay Milne ; two great-grandchildren , Ruby and Jack Cunney ; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Collins was also the father of the late J. Michael Collins and was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday , March 8 at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church in North Beverly. Interment was in North Beverly Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Grondin Funeral Home of Beverly.
