2. Myths versus the truth about wireless safety

As BT Exact's technical advisor on wireless health issues, John Collins has the important role of evaluating independent, worldwide research into the subject for BT and its customers.
...
John said: "No research has shown that there is any scientific reason to worry about the safety of using mobile handsets, or of living near mobile base stations."
And he can assert such an opinion - not as an industry stooge, but because he has put the days, weeks and months into painstakingly reading and monitoring all current, independent research into radio frequency emissions and their affect on human health.
In doing so, John has the information to provide comprehensive briefings to BT's businesses about any emerging issues concerning radio frequency emissions, about which they may need to consider. He added: "Of course, mobile phone health questions are a hot topic for discussion; people don't know all the facts and there are a lot of scare stories out there.
...
John also represents BT on a number of industry-based committees, involvement that has seen him contribute to the industry input to several Government reports. And recently, his role has involved him giving evidence in support of planning applications on behalf of mobile communications companies like mmO2.
Independent approval
Since 2000, a number of UK district councils have refused to grant planning permission for essential base station and antenna infrastructure that supports Airwave, the state-of-the-art emergency services communications network, which is already being used by some constabularies in the UK, citing public concerns about health issues as a key reason.
During an appeal in the South West of England in 2002 - against considerable local resistance and a number of hostile questions and heckling from the public - John took the stand to clarify health issues involved, according to the findings of respected, independent research, as carried out by universities in the UK and around the world. He said: "This evidence has become key to the case that the Airwave transmitters would not cause health problems. To date, all seven cases I've become involved with, have seen independent planning inspectors dismissing arguments, often based on misconceptions, that claim a potential health risk for residents living near the proposed base stations."
Wires and wherefores
John added: "What's important about my part in these appeals isn't just winning the case for the companies involved - important thought that is - it's also in convincing members of public that many stories they hear aren't true.A lot of people are prepared to listen to what I have to say.And now the mobile companies are also realising that getting the public involved from the outset helps the situation. Many of them now undertake up-front consultations when considering the location of a base station."
And to support his own evidence, John is quick to point out he's no 'nimby' either. He said: "I can honestly say that, in terms of health and safety issues, I wouldn't mind having a base station at the end of my garden. It's no different from living or working near any other radio transmitters."
Mastering masts
And as technology moves on, so does its hands-on implementation, as John explained: "Large transmitters won't be the only way forward in years to come. -
