DUBLIN BUS's much loved Media Relations manager, Joe Collins, was feted by his colleagues and friends on Friday 8th June 2001, when he retired from Dublin Bus after 47 years service to the CIE group.

Joe, who started as a junior clerk in the Road Freight division of CIE in 1954, went on to hold a number of senior positions within the semi-state transport company, which included a quarter of a century with CIE Tours International, during which time he attained the position of Vice-President of the company's New York operation.

For the last 10 years he was the public face of Dublin Bus, always on hand to explain the company's position to the media during a decade which saw industrial unrest as well as major change and new investment.

Staff and friends paid tribute to the man for his sterling work and tireless efficiency - "even on his last day before retirement he was the first into the office" - according to one colleague.

Joe himself paid tribute to the workers at all levels in CIE, who he said carried on a proud tradition of public service, often without thanks from those they served.

Joe will continue to work for Dublin Bus on a part time basis as a consultant.

Bustravel Ireland would like to thank Joe for his help and co-operation to the enthusiast fraternity over the years, which have included helping to promote and encourage this website, and playing a vital role in the recent Bombardier final running day. We wish Joe and his family all the best in his retirement.

Apart from the title, the school was also awarded 25,000 euro which was presented to Marty Ward by Eugene Fitzsimons of Independent Newspapers, and Joe Collins of CIE, the Two sponsors of the nationwide competition."
