Now, Joe Collins is a national champion in the instrument.

Collins won the national mountain dulcimer championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kan., in September. The champion, an associate professor at Gardner-Webb

University, shared his story and his music with The Star:

    What is a mountain dulcimer?

It's an instrument with three strings and was popular in the Appalachian Mountains between 1850 and 1900, Collins said.
    ...
Collins was playing guitar in coffeehouses when a friend lent him a mountain dulcimer."I took it home and kept it for three years," Collins said.

He learned to play the instrument, but said he didn't realize its full potential until he watched a mountain dulcimer concert at Cleveland Community College 14 years ago. After that experience, Collins decided he wanted to excel at the instrument.

"I was always a mediocre guitarist and I determined that I would be a great dulcimist," Collins said.

What's it like to compete at a national championship?

This was Collins' fifth time at the Walnut Valley Festival, which he said draws about 15,000 people. This year, he competed against 16 other players, many of whom had never competed for a national championship before.

Collins competes in only this contest each year, saying he dedicates the rest of the year to spending time with his wife, Pam.
