"Most companies [in test and measurement] are really geared toward performance and putting a piece of hardware in the network for SLAs [service level agreements]," says Jason Collins, senior marketing manager for SmartSight, a suite of diagnostic tools recently introduced by Spirent.
SmartSight, introduced recently at Supercomm 2004, is a hardware-based solution that draws operations data from network probes. These probes collect, analyze and store data that is used to make network adjustments, says Collins.
The probes address traditional test functions like latency, packet jitter and packet loss. In addition, they act as remote sniffers, providing protocol-level analysis of data flow.
SmartSight is currently installed in two RBOC networks, according to Collins.
