James J. Collins, Jr, PE, MBA is Executive Director, Global Delivery Devices Development and Manufacturing at Eli Lilly and Company. Jim graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1984 with a Bachelor's degree in engineering. He served in the US Navy as a officer completing assignments at sea and as an instructor at Georgia Institute of Technology. During this time, he earned a Masters of Business Administration at Georgia State University with a concentration in finance. He began his career at Lilly in 1990 working in project management in the engineering area becoming a registered professional mechanical engineering in Indiana. In 1993, Jim transferred to the Science and Technology Division of Lilly to join the Pharmaceutical Delivery Systems group and work on drug delivery technology. He managed the 3.0 mL insulin cartridge project resulting in the registration and launch of the 3.0 mL cartridge in Europe and Japan. In 1995, he was promoted to Manager New Product Planning for Devices, and worked to establish new methods of defining unmet customer needs and delivery system strategy. In 1997, Jim assumed the team leadership role of Lilly's next generation prefilled pen system, the Humulin/Humalog Pen. Following the global launch of the Humulin/Humalog Pen system in 1999, he was promoted to Director of Lilly's Pharmaceutical Delivery Systems group responsible for device development and reuseable pen manufacturing. In 2002, Jim was promoted to Executive Director, Global Delivery Devices Development and Manufacturing responsible for Lilly's delivery device business to include advanced development, commercialization, and global manufacturing of delivery device systems in support of Lilly pharmaceutical portfolio where he is currently serving.
