Collins studied for the priesthood at Cathedral College there and at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington.Following his ordination he was appointed associate pastor of St. Aloysius Church, Great Neck.During his more than 20 years at St. Aloysius, Msgr.Collins was also representative of Civil Defense, and representative and then diocesan director of the Apostleship of Prayer.Later, in addition to his parish assignments, he served as a member of the priests' personnel board and the inter-diocesan commission for religious stipends. In 1962 he was appointed secretary to the diocese's first auxiliary bishop, Bishop Vincent Baldwin, and resided at the rectory of the bishop's parish, St. Joseph's in Garden City.He served as pastor of St. Dominic from 1964 until his retirement as pastor emeritus in 1987, and he continued to reside at St. Dominic until his death. He received papal honors with the title "monsignor" in 1985.Msgr. Ribaudo said that Msgr.Collins received extraordinary support at the end of his life from his family and close friends, including a number who were parishioners."He was very loved – he was very lovable – and they cared for him so beautifully."Someone was with him every day since January, 2001, Msgr.

Collins took on the role of pastor emeritus beautifully: "He was very supportive of everything we did."He loved that he was able to stay here," at the parish property, and he died gently and peacefully. On the occasion of his golden jubilee in 1989, Msgr.Collins told The Long Island Catholic that the greatest help to his priesthood had been the loyalty and support of the parishioners he had served."If it were not for Catholic people like them, people who give of their labor, of their hearts, of their time to their priests and their Church, the task of the priests would border on the impossible.Without their dedicated work and support, the American Church would still be among the missionary Churches of the world. They have been a sustaining strength in my priesthood."Msgr. Ribaudo said the liturgical celebrations surrounding Msgr.Collins's death were "all so joyful," and that a great contribution was made by the choir, which was founded by Msgr.Collins with Phrasia Stanwich, who remains its director.Msgr.Collins wanted a formal choir, and with 50 voices at the funeral Mass they were "spectacular," Msgr.
